Two chains can look identical in a product photo and carry very different price tags. Usually the reason is construction: one is solid gold through and through, the other is hollow — built around an empty core. Neither is “fake.” Here’s what actually changes.
Solid gold chains
A solid chain is exactly what it sounds like: each link is solid metal. That means:
- More weight and presence on the neck or wrist.
- Much better durability — solid links resist bending, denting and stretching, and can usually be repaired if a link breaks.
- Higher price, because there’s more gold in the piece.
Choose solid if you want a chain to last through years of daily wear, if you’re hanging a heavier pendant, or if the weight and feel of real gold matter to you.
Hollow gold chains
A hollow chain uses tubes of gold shaped into links around an empty centre. Same karat gold, same colour, same look from a normal distance — but:
- Far lighter, which some people prefer for comfort, especially in wider styles.
- Significantly cheaper for the same width and length, because it uses less gold.
- Less durable — hollow links can dent or kink if snagged or crushed, and are harder to repair.
Choose hollow if you want a big, bold look without the weight or the price — for example a wide Cuban or puff chain for occasions rather than every single day.
How to tell which you’re buying
Product listings state it, and weight is the giveaway: a solid chain in a given width and length weighs noticeably more — and costs more — than the hollow version. If a wide chain is priced surprisingly low, it’s almost certainly hollow.
A middle option: hollow puff
Hollow puff chains are designed to maximise the visual size-to-weight ratio — a very full, rounded profile for minimal gold. They’re the most cost-effective way to get a chunky look.
Care
Both types last longer if you take them off before sleeping, showering, working out and swimming, and store them flat rather than piled up. Hollow chains especially benefit from not being crushed at the bottom of a drawer.
