Gold Chain Length & Width Guide (With Sizing Chart)

Two numbers decide how a chain wears: its length (how far down it hangs) and its width (how thick and bold it looks). Here’s how to pick both.

Chain length

Length is measured end to end, including the clasp, in inches. Where a given length sits depends on your height and build, but these are the typical reference points:

Length Where it sits Common use
16" Base of the neck / collarbone Women’s choker length
18" Just below the collarbone Most popular women’s length; small pendants
20" A few inches below the collarbone Most popular men’s length; unisex with a pendant
22" At or just above the top of the chest Men’s standard; sits over a crew neckline
24" Middle of the chest Men’s; larger pendants, layering
26–30" Lower chest / sternum Statement chains, big medallions, rosaries

Quick rule: to show the chain above a t-shirt collar, go 20–22". For a pendant to sit at the centre of the chest, go 24" or longer.

Chain width

Width is measured across the chain in millimetres. It’s the single biggest factor in how “loud” a chain looks:

  • 1–3 mm — delicate. Everyday, layering, holds a small charm. Reads as subtle jewelry.
  • 4–6 mm — the everyday sweet spot. Clearly visible, still versatile, works with most pendants. A good first “real” chain width.
  • 7–9 mm — bold. A statement on its own; pair with a substantial pendant or wear solo.
  • 10 mm and up — full statement / iced-out territory. Heavy in solid gold; often chosen hollow to keep the weight down.

Matching width to length

Wider chains generally look best a little longer, so the links have room to sit. A 10 mm Cuban at 18" can look cramped; the same chain at 22–24" hangs properly. Thin chains work at any length.

Bracelets

Bracelet sizing follows the same idea. Standard men’s lengths are 8–9"; women’s are 7–7.5". Measure around your wrist and add about 0.5–0.75" for a comfortable fit.
